St Ivo Secondary School Visits the St Ives House

St Ivo SchoolOver 300 year 7 students from St Ivo Secondary School took a tour around the St Ives Green House last week as part of their Geography studies.  The students spent time learning about all the features within the property and the benefits that can be gained in terms saving money and carbon emissions.

St Ivo is a very active school in raising environmental awareness within the school as well as the wider community.  The school as gained the Silver award and is working towards Green Flag status as part of the Eco-Schools programme – an international award programme that guides schools on their sustainable journey, providing a framework to help embed these principles into the heart of school life.

This year the school has been busy identifying where water savings can be made with the help of Anglian Water. The financial savings made in the utility bills have been donated to the charity ‘Water Aid’ helping to support well installation in Africa.

The Eco-Ivo is a member of the Carbon Trust and when measuring their carbon footprint, it was discovered that approximately 60% of St Ivo students have a better carbon footprint than the national average. Students have worked hard to introduce a successful awareness raising campaign helping drive behavioural change in staff and pupils alike in relation to energy use.

The Green House project is an excellent resource for householders, schools and business to find out more about how individuals can help to meet the challenges of climate change and rising fuel costs.  The properties give visitors an opportunity to see renewable technologies in situ, see how you can encourage a wide range of biodiversity in to your garden and highlights some of the simpler measures we can all do to save energy.

Join us for an open evening on Wednesday 28 September whereby teachers and governors will have an opportunity to look around the property in St Ives.  Also the Cambridgeshire Environmental Education Services will be providing information about the resources they provide and the national Eco-Schools programme.
