SuperHomes announce the Spring Openings

The multi award winning SuperHomes project has announced the dates for this year’s Spring Openings.  From Saturday 27 March to Sunday 3 April homes across the country will be opening to the public to showcase their energy efficiency measures and renewable technology installations.  These homes have undergone energy makeovers and have all achieved carbon savings in excess of 60%.  They are the early adopters for the 14 million homes which Chris Huhne believes will benefit from the Green Deal.  Government plans should be finalised by 2012, but in the meantime these real life examples are already blazing the trail and showing what is possible.

The great thing about visiting these exemplars is that the homeowner provides the tour.  Someone who has already done the thinking, priced the renovations and undertaken the measures, and is therefore uniquely qualified to offer advice and inspiration to those wishing to undertake similar measures.  Anyone who has just seen their fuel bill, after our atrocious winter weather, will understand that we all need to follow this route if we are to have comfortable, warm and lower carbon homes in the future.

SuperHomes range from small terraced houses to large detached properties and include a listed thatched cottage, an 18th century converted mill and a couple of carbon negative properties – yes they really produce more energy than they use.  The SuperHomers have chosen different measures such as internal, external, loft, floor, ceiling or cavity insulation, or often a mixture of these.  Many SuperHomes have achieved such significant savings because they have also installed renewable energy technologies.  Many have solar thermal and photovoltaic systems, a few have used wood fuelled heating and others have installed heat pumps and mechanical heat recovery ventilation systems.

SuperHomes are all different so everyone can find one which is similar to their own home; they are available throughout the country, from Cornwall to Norfolk and the Isle of Wight right up to the Scottish borders.  These homes are the tip of the iceberg on the way to 14 million.
